WHY BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU IS IDEAL FOR SELF DEFENSE

-Historically a massive Core problem area for various martial arts is the avoidance of the clinch (contact) and the ground portion of the fight. Stats show that arround 80% of all fights end on the ground either by chance or design!

As such many martial arts are poorly equipped to deal with a fight as they do not train for these phases of the fight where the majority (over 80%) of fights end up and takes place.

-The BJJ approach to fighting is primarily not to exchange strikes in neutral positions with an opponent (i.e. the opponents larger size & weight often puts you at a disadvantage when using strikes as the means to defend)

-Fight data show that it is very difficult to stop someone charging at you and going into a grappling situation with you.

-The notion of “One strike, one kill” to defend oneself is an impractical solution to an attack and belongs more in the movies rather than reality!

-A much Safer option to deal with an attacker is to get clinch control of your opponent, off balance them, prevent strikes by being in a more favourable position than your opponent & from there you can decide what to do.

Some basic options are:

1- To shove your opponent away and to make your escape

2-To stay in the clinch in a position of dominance (ie rear clinch) or standing submission hold to control and dominate your opponent. Objects (like a wall) can be used similarly to the ground to control a larger, stronger opponent.

3-To take the fight to the ground and dominate and control your opponent from a superior position or with superior movement mechanics. (This is Better for lawsuits as it is a less aggressive way to subdue an opponent)

4- lastly striking your opponent can now be employed from a position of superiority, from where your opponent is unable to strike, or at least unable to strike with much force, taking away their strength/weight advantage, while you can take advantage of your superior position to land significant strikes to your opponent.

-Ironically BJJ is far better at preventing going to the ground than any other martial art & therefore a BJJ student can control where he/she wants the fight to be! (i.e. avoid the hazardous ground or avoid going to the ground because of multiple attackers – out numbered – or to take the fight to the ground if needed).

-Another fundamental problem of most martial arts is that they do not take into account the chaotic, aggressive & wild nature of a real fight & the fact that all this (over 80% of the time) the fight ends up on the ground.

Early in our BJJ self-defence program students are appropriately and progressively exposed and trained in simulated live fighting situations.

Those continuing on past our self-defence program participate in daily live sparring/rolling sessions “randori” to develop and hone their skills.

This type of training has proven itself as being far more superior … that is, training safer techniques daily on live resisting opponents is far more effective than other martial arts that train, supposedly more dangerous techniques, but not in real live situations due to the dangerous nature of the techniques.

To summarise, BJJ IS the ANSWER:

BJJ practitioners are the most skilled at preventing fights going to floor and are also the most skilled when they land up on the floor (over 80% of fights end on the floor).  They also display remarkable calmness and the ability to select the correct techniques during real live fighting situations which are chaotic in nature due to their live sparring training methodology.

The primary aim of BJJ is to put oneself into a position of control & dominate an opponent from which he/she cannot hurt you but you can impose your choice of technique on your attacker and subdue your attacker.

As such BJJ and Grappling is the most NB answer to the fundamental problem in martial arts because of the difficulty in preventing an opponent grabbing you and the fight ending on the ground if you are not trained in BJJ/Grappling!

Answering Some common arguments …

The Ground & Self-defence

Many martial arts have said and argued that going to the ground is unsafe for self-defence.

  • BJJ advocates grappling for Self-defence but not necessarily always going to the ground.
  • BJJ is versatile and one can use BJJ standing or on the ground!
  • Ironically BJJ practitioners are the best at preventing a fight going to the ground as that is a major focus in BJJ/Grappling are clinch and takedown defence/s.

Foul Tactics and grappling (BJJ) for Self-defence

Sone argue that Foul tactics work against BJJ (such as biting, eye gouging, small joint manipulation etc.) but in reality this serves more as a nuisance than an actual deterrent for BJJ practitioners.  In reality BJJ practitioners can utilise the same foul tactics from far more dominant positions of control plus put on submissions and use foul tactics simultaneously.

Multiple Attackers and grappling (BJJ) for Self-defence

When one is under attack from Multiple opponents, you find yourself in a way worse predicament!

Grand claims have been made by various martial arts in the ability to defend against multiple attackers but those same martial arts practitioners cannot defend themselves in, one on one situations, against a BJJ/Grappling practitioner.

Grand claims of martial artists defending themselves against a huge number of multiple attackers belong in the realm of fantasy and movies rather than in the real world.

There are ways to deal with multiple attackers using BJJ and various strategies, but one is always at a massive disadvantage in these situations!! Consequently these should be avoided at all costs!
